Some theater truly makes you think. Some, as Tennessee Performing Arts Center's president and CEO Kathleen O'Brien puts it, can even challenge your belief system.

In the case of Mamma Mia!, however, the biggest challenge for audience members may well be admitting they're ABBA fans in the first place, and in the second, that they're just out for a good time. The feel-good phenomenon is all froth and fun, with dancing and sing-along songs besides.

THE COLOR PURPLE Comes To Tennessee Performing Arts Center

Author: Jed Brewer

Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison’s send-up-silly lyrics and music, as well as Bob Martin and Don McKellar’s witty book, are very entertaining. And their creation is charmingly brought to life by a talented cast.

The conceit around which The Drowsy Chaperone revolves is a simple and effective one: The lights come up on the cluttered apartment of the lonely Man in Chair (Craig E. Treubert), a theater fanatic who puts on an album of the long-forgotten (and fictional) 1928 musical bearing this show’s title.

Mamma Mia!
Is it possible to have too much ABBA?

Knowing me, knowing you, the answer is no.

The spangly Swedish quartet that gave the world "Waterloo" and "Dancing Queen" has sold 400 million records since its 1970s heyday and spawned the hugely successful stage and film musical Mamma Mia!

And now there's ABBAWORLD - a new museum/theme park in London with enough music, mementos and memory-lane appeal to satisfy even the most fervent ABBA fan.

If you've ever found yourself so enthusiastic about an album that you couldn't wait to share it with a friend, a certain "Man in Chair" is singing your song.

Actually, it's more that Man in Chair — a central figure in five-time Tony-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone — wants someone else to sing his song. Again.

And again.

Dropping the needle on his favorite LP — a fictional 1928 musical comedy — Man in Chair brings the story to glorious life within the walls of his drab apartment, pausing now and again to offer comments either sassy or sincere about the state of today's theater. This week, Nashville audiences can share his sense of escapism; the musical opens Tuesday as part of the HCA/Tri-Star Broadway at TPAC series.

...

'Proof' analyzes line between genius and insanity

Author: Jennifer Wright

FIONA SOLTES, FOR THE TENNESSEAN • February 5, 2010
